How to care for your hand-painted tote bag (so it lasts for years)

A hand-painted tote is a little piece of art you carry every day. With a few simple habits, it can stay bright and sturdy for years. The golden rule: treat it gently, the way you would a favourite piece of clothing that cannot go in the washing machine.
These are general guidelines. Materials and finishes vary from piece to piece, so if you are unsure, test any cleaning method on a small, hidden area first.
Cleaning
- Spot clean only. Dab marks with a soft, damp cloth and a drop of mild soap, working gently and blotting rather than rubbing.
- Avoid machine washing, soaking or scrubbing. Water and friction can dull paint and loosen embroidery.
- Do not use bleach, harsh chemicals or stain removers on painted areas.
Drying
Let the bag air dry naturally, away from direct heat. Dry in a shaded, well-ventilated spot, because long hours in strong sunlight can fade colours over time. Avoid hair dryers and radiators, which can stiffen fabric and affect the paint.
Everyday habits
- Keep it light. Tote handles are strong, but regularly overloading any bag stresses the seams.
- Avoid rough surfaces. Constant rubbing against walls, zippers or jewellery can scuff painted areas.
- Keep it away from pens, makeup and anything that can leak or stain.
- Use a cloth pouch inside for liquids, and carry sharp items in their own case.
Smoothing out creases
If your bag has creased in storage, iron it on a low setting from the reverse side with a thin cloth between the iron and the fabric. Never press a hot iron directly onto painted or embroidered areas.
Storing it
When you are not using it, store your tote in a cool, dry place, folded loosely or hung up, and not squashed under heavy items. A breathable cotton bag works well; avoid sealed plastic, which can trap moisture.
